ZIGGY

Even though it was a familiar process at this point, I still found it slightly unsettling to take over not only the shell of another creature, but the functions of its body systems.

Like the heart.

The most inconvenient of all internal organs.

While this strange hunk of muscle was necessary for transporting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, I now knew it was a liability as well.

Having Micah confirm he saw my kind as monsters felt as if the one-way pump system of my stolen Earthling heart had malfunctioned, flooding my system with a backflow of blood.

Drowning me in… emotions.

The pain was somehow worse than when the Stellarian on Zeanides had abducted Micah because this time, he had made the choice.

And—as usual—the choice isn’t me.

“Why do I need to leave?” the reason for my anguish stubbornly asked instead of obeying my simple request as he was more than capable of doing.

Because you’re going to leave me anyway.

“Because I need to interrogate this monster,” I growled. “And you’re clearly opposed to the methods I may use to accomplish that.”

Micah’s jaw ticked as we stared each other down, and I had to forcibly tamp down the aggravating urge to comfort him as his distress flavored the air.

“Why in Stellaria’s name do you need to interro—” my prisoner began, but I silenced them with a scathing look.

I’m the one in charge here.

“You possess information pertinent to my mission,” I coldly replied, more annoyed that they’d given me a fair fight than anything. “And I intend to find out exactly what you know—”

“Our mission.” Micah’s soft voice snapped my attention back to him. “It’s our mission, Zig. And I’m not leaving.”

Fucking hell.

I wanted to yell. I wanted to shove Micah into the hallway and slam what remained of the door behind him. More than anything, I wanted to star hop us back to the Lodger 79 and fuck him until he remembered he was mine.

But what’s done is done.

The main reason I did none of the above was because I didn’t want to show weakness—either to my fellow Stellarian, or to my mate.

No.

Not my mate.

He was never meant to be mine.

“Fine.” I raised an eyebrow in challenge. “If you would like to lead the interrogation, be my guest.”

Let’s see if you can play with me.

Micah’s eyes widened a fraction of an inch, but he quickly buried the reaction as he turned to face our captive. Unfortunately, Stellarians were extremely perceptive creatures—even without the use of our tendrils—so his moment of uncertainty did not go unnoticed.

“What’s the matter, little morsel?” the Stellarian purred in the trade language, making me want to skip the interrogation and go straight to destroying the evidence. “Are you afraid to face me without your”—they squinted in my direction, sizing me up—“hired muscle backing you up?”

Micah doesn’t need me to protect him.

I hate it.

My traitorous heart swelled with even more traitorous pride when Micah proved my point. Instead of responding to the Stellarian’s taunt, he looked down at his hands and casually materialized an object out of thin air.
